American activists set sail from Greece on Friday aboard a boat set to take part in a pro-Palestinian flotilla to Gaza, defying calls from Israel to cancel it and a ban by Athens.

The vessel was stopped by the Greek Coast Guard some 25 minutes after its unauthorized departure. The boat was expected to be taken back to port.

The vessel, dubbed "The Audacity of Hope", left Perama port for the open seas, a Reuters witness said. Greek authorities said earlier on Friday that ships destined to Gaza were prohibited from leaving Greek ports.

Despite the Greek ban, the vessel left port around 4:45 pm Friday, Ynet learned. It was banned from departing by Greek officials citing technical problems, but chose to ignore the orders.

Steven,

Greek Coast guard isn't as interesting a subject as the Israeli Navy (or IDF for that matter), is it?

No, the Greek Coast Guard isn't as provocative as the Israeli Navy, but I would've thought that even the committed leftists at MSNBC would see this event as 'newsworthy'.

In fact, they have now listed the story; it is buried a few clicks deep in the website:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43607134/ns/world_news-europe/

It appears that MSNBC sees 'spray tanning' as more newsworthy subject matter.

Even the US government is opposed to the Flotilla. They didn't act to stop it-- but Secy of State Clinton made astrong statement opposing it.

The Weblog "Challah Hu Akbar" has some excellent coverage of the story.

These peoples' disregard for rules is amazing. But at least one may face serious consequences for his flagrant disregard for Greek law:

Greece's coast guard said the captain of the "Audacity of Hope" faces charges of trying to leave port without permission and of endangering the lives of the boat's passengers. The latter charge is a felony.
